Youth Commissioners attend the 2008 National League of Cities’ Congress of Cities

Members of the Chatham County Youth Commission and Savannah Youth Council attended the 2008 National League of Cities’ Congress of Cities held in Orlando, Florida November 13-15, 2008.

Youth Commissioners, Erica Green, Jamesha English, Keyuanna Green, Kathryn Pinckney, Byron Spellman and Youth Council members, Brianna Adams, Trevon Epps, Claire Hammond and Demetrius Selby attended the conference with Mayors, Council Members and Youth Delegates from across the United States in this annual meeting. In addition to networking and attending sessions with their adult peers, the youth worked on a master plan to develop youth in their community.

The Chatham County Youth Commission was founded in 1992 by Dr. Priscilla D. Thomas and the Chatham County Commission. During it’s 16 year history of serving high school students, it has over 200 graduates and has been duplicated in Fulton County (Atlanta), GA; Prince George’s County, MD; Alachua County (Gainesville), FL; and Cass County (Fargo), ND. Additional Youth Commissions are in various stages of development in Albany, GA, Newnan, GA and DeKalb County, GA. The program is directed by Alderman Van R. Johnson, II.

The Savannah Youth Council was founded in 2004 by Mayor Otis S. Johnson and the Savannah City Council and serves middle school students. The program is directed by Savannah City Clerk Dyanne Reese.
