Savannah Youth Council member Cierra White was the winner of this year’s Mayors’ DollarWise Essay Contest. Ms. White, an Oglethorpe Charter School 8th grader, wrote about how her family saved money in this difficult economy.
“Now more than ever it is important for families everywhere to make wise financial choices and to save money whenever possible,” White wrote in her essay. “My family waits for sales, comparison shops, uses coupons and asks ourselves this question frequently: ‘Is it worth spending our money on?’ This is how my family makes dollar and sense of our family budget.”
DollarWise Week, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, runs through Sunday. Its goal is to increase financial education and literacy across the country.
The winners of Savannah’s 2011 Mayors’ DollarWise Essay Contest are:1st place –Cierra White, Oglethorpe Charter School; 2nd place – Lauren Sheldon, Savannah Christian Preparatory School; 3rd place – Calvin Ford and Chase Polak
The winners will receive savings bonds and attend the annual NLC conference in Phoenix, Arizona.
