Former Savannah State football coach Earnest Wilson has been fired as the head football coach at Elizabeth City State, effective immediately.
Wilson took over as head coach of the Division II program in February, 2016. In his first season, he led the Vikings to a 5-5 overall record; 4-3 in the CIAA. He was also named the 2016 CIAA Football Coach of the Year.
In 2017, ECSU finished the season with a 4-6 overall record (2-4 in the CIAA).
Wilson had a salary of $100,000 per year but $55,000 of that came from being a member of the ECSU faculty where he taught physical education classes.
Wilson’s teaching contract is set to expire at the end of May while his coaching contract ends at the end of June.
Before coaching at Elizabeth City State, Wilson was the head football coach at Savannah State where he put together a 2-32 record in three seasons.
