What we don’t know can and does harm us, to the point of death. But, first the illness, heartache, pain, financial cost, incapacitation and loss of body parts. Then the box. No return. Chemicals in foods to make them shelf stable with artificial ‘freshness’ lull us into a false sense of safety.

Artificial colorings are found in sodas, fruit juices and salad dressings, can contribute to behavioral problems in children and lead to a significant reduction in IQ. Other studies have linked food colorings to cancer. Watch out for Blue #1 and Blue #2, which can cause chromosomal damage. Look for it in candies, cereals, soft drinks, and sports drinks. Red dye # 3, and Red #40, have been proven to cause thyroid cancer and chromosomal damage, may also interfere with brain-nerve function. Look for them in fruit cocktail, maraschino cherries, cherry pie mix, ice cream, candy, bakery products and more. Yellow #6 and Yellow tartrazine Increases the number of kidney and adrenal gland tumors, and may cause chromosomal damage. Look for it in American cheese, macaroni and cheese packages, candy, carbonated beverages, lemonade, commercial teas, and more!

Sodium sulphite

This preservative used in wine-making and other processed foods, shows us as a sensitivity in persons with asthma to sulfites. Persons may experience headaches, breathing problems, and rashes, or even sudden death by closing down the airway altogether, leading to cardiac arrest. Look for it in Wine and dried fruit.

Sodium nitrate/ sodium nitrite A common preservative commonly added to processed meats like bacon, ham, hot dogs, and corned beef. Studies link sodium nitrate to various types of cancer. Look for it in cured meats such as bacon, ham and lunch meats, also known as deli meats, hot dogs, or anything smoked.

BHA and BHT are preservatives found in many cereals, chewing gums, potato chips, and vegetable cooking oils. This preservative keeps foods from changing color and flavor or from becoming rancid. Causes changes in the neurological system, altering behavior and can cause cancer. BHA and BHT are oxidants which form cancer-causing compounds in the body. Look for it in potato chips, gum, cereal, frozen sausages, enriched rice, lard, shortening, candy, gelatins.

Sulphur Dioxide

Sulphur additives are toxic and in this country, the FDA has prohibited their use on raw fruits and vegetables. Adverse reactions include bronchial problems mostly in persons with asthma, low blood pressure, flushing tingling sensations or anaphylactic shock. It also destroys vitamin B1, and vitamin E. Avoid consumption by children, and if you suffer from conjunctivitis, bronchitis, emphysema, bronchial asthma, or cardiovascular disease.

Potassium Bromate

An additive used to increase the volume in white flour, breads, and rolls, potassium bromate is known to cause cancer in animals. Even small amounts in bread can create problems for humans. Look for it in Breads, rolls and other bakery items. Read all ingredient labels.
