The West Chatham Wildcats Middle School football team has done it again! The football team has won the championship two years in a row with undefeated seasons. Kadeen Wade was the only starter on defense from last year’s team. He was the heart of the defense. He led the team in tackles and sacks. James Steale was the only player to return from offense. He played guard and controlled the offensive line. It was tough going into the season with all new players and the first two games on the road.
First, we played Coastal Middle School. It was a tough football game. It went down to the wire. We won in the last few seconds with a 15 yard run from John Kennedy with a score of 12 to 8. Next, we took on Southwest Middle School. We won 28 to 6. The players came out and jumped all over Southwest early. All 37 players for West Chatham got a chance to taste playing some football. The third game was against Mercer. Mercer was our toughest opponent last year.
However, once again, the Wildcats showed that they were up to play football on that Thursday evening with the score ending up 36-0. The next week was a bye week for us. This gave us a chance to take a day off and rest. Derenne Middle school was our next opponent. We heard they were big and fast. We came out the first half to a slow start but managed to pick it up in the second half. We won 18 to 6.
The final game of the regular season was a rematch against Southwest Middle School. Once again, we finished strong beating Southwest 28 to 6. Our record is 5 wins and 0 losses. We were 1st place on our side and had to play Coastal at West Chatham. The first game against Coastal was tough. We barely beat them. However, on that Thursday, we came out ready and determined to win. We won 26 to 0. The defense showed up ready to play led by Kadeen Wade. The final and last game would be the championship game against Myers Middle School. We knew Myers was tough. Their record was the same as ours with 6 wins and 0 losses. West Chatham beat Myers last year in a close ball game to advance to the championship.
So then we met head to head at Optimist Field for the Chatham County Middle School football championship game, November 20, 2012. Both West Chatham and Myers teams were great and undefeated. Unfortunately, there could be only one winner. Myers came out and score quick in the first quarter making the score 6 to 0. The extra point was missed. In the second quarter, the defense stepped up. Pressure was put on the quarterback as he dropped back to pass by Kadeen Wade and the big defensive line. John Kennedy intercepted the pass and returned it 30 yards. West Chatham scored off a 40 yard pass from Xavier Jones to Jamonte Roberts. The two point conversion was good by Kennedy making the score 8 to 6 West Chatham leading at the half.
The defense strengthened the second half and the offense controlled the ball. West Chatham’s defense did not allow a first down in the second half. Chris Scot, outside linebacker, intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it for a touchdown making the score 14 to 6. The defense held them down for the rest of the game and that’s how it ended with West Chatham on top. Congratulations to Head Coach/offensive coordinator, Jerome Lee; Defensive coordinator, Barry Dunham; and Special teams coach, Thomas Wallace.
