The kids of the West Broad Street YMCA had a surprise last week when members of the Savannah Sunrise Rotary showed up to give them much needed school supplies.
“This is huge for our kids,” said Peter Doliber Executive Director. “No one thinks of school supplies in the middle of the year, but it is when the kids really need it most.”
The Savannah Sunrise Rotary, using a district grant and donations from club members, decided to help the kids of the West Broad Street YMCA and the Midtown Community Center, two organizations the Sunrise Rotary supports year round.
“This was a great opportunity for us,” offers Pam Brandt, the Sunrise Rotarian who put the whole even together. “I’m not sure who has more fun, us or the kids!”
The Sunrise Rotary brought pens, paper, pencils, staplers, crayons, markers, notebooks, and many other school supplies. Over 75 children received a bag of supplies to take home and there was enough left over to help other kids throughout the year.
“We think the work these two groups do is extremely important for our community,” says Clete Bergen, Sunrise Rotary Club President. “And to see the looks on the faces of these kids is really overwhelm ing.”
The Savannah Sunrise Rotary has a long tradition of helping the community. It’s annual Trick or Trot race held every November raises funds for the West Broad Street YMCA, Midtown Community Center and Safe Shelter. Like all Rotary clubs, they work to help their community and support those organizations that are making a difference, especially in the lives of children.
