On Monday, June 10, the Golden State Warriors faced the Toronto Raptors in Game 5. The pressure was on the Warriors to win another game to come back from their 3-1 deficit and keep their dynasty alive. Lurking in the background was the uncertainty of the status of one of the Warriors star players, Kevin Durant. The last game Durant played was against the Houston Rockets in Game 5 of the second round in which he strained his calf, but after two losses against the Raptors many were itching to see him rehabilitated and back in the game. He was eventually cleared to play the game by his doctors, trainers and he agreed with the decision. However, that decision became one that he may have regretted. About two minutes into the second quarter, Durant falls to the floor clutching his right leg and retreats to the locker room with a possible Achilles injury.
The Warriors ended up taking the win with a 106-105 final score, but many on the team grappled with feelings of guilt and sorrow despite extending their team’s run in the series. Durant was set to enter free agency on July 1st and this places all current plans up in the air. Game 6 will be on Thursday, June 13 in Oakland at 9 PM.
