Savannah State’s student success and outreach librarian, Patrick Morgan, is aiming towards getting students to register to vote. Many students are unaware that the ability to register is right at their fingertips at the Asa H. Gordon Library on campus. There, students may register electronically on the computer or by paper.
There are four laptops set up in the lobby of the library. There is a stand that explains everything students can do to make sure they are registered. This includes registering to vote, checking your registration, finding your polling place and/or learning who is on November 5th’s ballot. It takes about 10 minutes to fill out the registration form. If a student fills out a paper registration, they are encouraged to take the initiative to mail it out themselves or Morgan picks the forms up every Friday and delivers them to the post office.
Morgan has been creating awareness for voter’s registration since 2017 for college students. However, he has not had the outcome he is hoping for. Morgan said, “We are trying to get students to register to vote so that they are in a good position for the presidential election. Sadly, I have not gotten any. Last year, I only received about a handful.” With the help of the librarians, Morgan is hoping that more students sign up before the deadline on October 5th. The last week to register on campus is October 1st.
When registering, students who use the schools address, 3219 College St, are encouraged to use 147 Tompkins Rd address instead because it is part of the City of Savannah. Students who use the schools address will vote at Seventh Day Adventist Church on 5100 La Roche Ave. Savannah State wants to ensure that students are using their correct address so that they are eligible to vote in their local polling places. If a student chooses to use their personal address as their permanent address, they should make sure they are present and know exactly where to go on voting day in that county.
The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming November Municpal election is October 5th. After registering, the registration is good up until next year’s general election on November 3, 2020. The Savannah State Library is open Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. This is open to all students, not just Savannah State.
