Volunteers Sought, New Location Added, for Tax Prep Program


The City of Savannah is sponsoring a third free incometax preparation site in January to help citizens with incomes below $52,000 this tax filing season.

The City’s Department of Economic Development, in partnership with the nonprofit Neighborhood Improvement Association, is opening a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site at the Windsor Forest Community Center to serve residents on Savannah’s southside.

All VITA sites will open and begin taking clients on January 18, 2011. The 2011 City-sponsored VITA sites are: Savannah Entrepreneurial Center, Open for tax preparation: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last client is allowed to sign in at 3 p.m.) Moses Jackson Center, Open for tax preparation: Tuesday, Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last client is allowed to sign in at 3 p.m.) Windsor Forest Community Center, Open for tax preparation: Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (last client is allowed to sign in at 3PM)

These VITA sites join almost a dozen other sites (listed below) across the community that are part of the Chatham Savannah Asset Development Coalition.

The Coalition is currently looking for tax preparation volunteers to help participate in the VITA program.

Volunteers will be trained with Internal Revenue Service tax materials to help people whose incomes are $52,000 or less with their federal and state of Georgia individual income tax returns.

Volunteers are asked to donate about 4 hours a week helping at a VITA site from January 19 through April 15. All VITA sites use computers to prepare and electronically transmit tax returns (e-file). For more information or to volunteer, please call 912-447- 5577.
