VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Eleventh Annual Day of Great Thanksgiving, November 22

Old Savannah City Mission, Savannah’s Five Star Gospel Rescue Mission, 2414 Bull Street, Savannah, (912) 232-1979 www.oscm.org needs volunteers throughout the week. If you want to make a difference, please call Dana (232-1979) or email her (dana@oscm.org) or just drop by the Mission. We will put you to work.

For the third consecutive year, Wiley McCrary, owner of Wiley’s Championship BBQ and winner of multi-state awards is in the lead in preparation of 250 turkeys; however, he is not alone. Our friends Blowing Smoke BBQ, Papa’s BBQ and Brinson Clements are on board to help with the food preparation.

For many people the delicious dinner served on Saturday will be their only Thanksgiving dinner. The Mission has already been assisting a significant increase in people. People are looking for help, especially for food. Our economic difficulties are driving more people to the Mission and to our Day of Great Thanksgiving.

On Saturday, November 22 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. delicious smoked turkey Thanksgiving dinners will be served free of charge to our community’s neediest citizens. Too often in Savannah we live "parallel" lives. People pass on the street, but never meet. It is meeting time this Saturday. Thousands of people, many of them volunteers others are friends and neighbors, aka homeless will have their first face to face encounter.

Teams of volunteers will fan out across the area to deliver 1,200 meals to seniors and those with special needs who are unable to come to Forsyth Park.

This event mirrors much of what we imagine of the First Thanksgiving. Native Americans who had helped Pilgrims survive through difficult times joined them at a table filled with the bountiful provisions of God. In a genuine spirit of unity they enjoyed a meal together and gave thanks to God. This event is open to the community. There is a place at the Thanksgiving table for everyone… those who help and those who need help. For the first time many volunteers will look into the pain-filled eyes of the less fortunate.

Call (912) 232-1979, ext. 200 or email Dana at dana@oscm.org. If you wish, just drop in the Mission. There’s much work to be done.
