Meet Alexis Williamson who graduated as valedictorian of her class on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, and is now heading to one of the top universities in the country— Duke University in the fall.

Alexis Williamson was a dedicated individual who remained committed not just to her high-academics achievements, but also to her extracurricular activities and volunteer works. At Savannah Arts Academy, Alexis has been class president of her senior class for the past year, in addition to being vice president of the National Honor Society, president of the Tri-M Honor Society, president of the Savannah Community 4-H Club, a student leader in the Gulfstream Student Leadership and Hugh O’ Brian Youth Leadership Programs, a student ambassador for her school, and lead attorney for the Mock Trial team. She has also been part of the English Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, the International Cultural Exchange Organization, the Beta Club, the Future Business Leaders of America Club, and piano accompanist for several of Savannah Arts Academy choirs.

Throughout her high school years, she has held a job at the Davenport House Museum working in the gift shop and giving tours to provide information about the mission of the Davenport House Museum. Alexis also worked as an Assistant Camp Director for the City of Savannah Cultural Arts Department helping to implement activities to entertain children ages 5-12. In addition, she has served as a piano accompanist for the Savannah Children’s Choir. AP Scholar of Distinction and a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student (2019), Alexis, has a big heart, and every year has been heavily involved in her community by serving as a volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank to bag groceries, working with the Samaritan’s Purse International Relief to prepare Christmas boxes for orphanages children in Africa, making homemade pillowcases for various nursing homes and homeless shelters, serving as a piano accompanist at Thunderbolt Nursing Home and Summit Nursing Home to entertain seniors through music, donating toiletries through the International Cultural Exchange Organization and other honor societies for the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and other natural disasters.

Alexis is the recipient of several scholarships and awards that including the Judge Gadsden Scholarship, Willie Lovett Scholarship, the Savannah Junior League Kids Who Care Scholarship, the Davenport House Senior Scholarship, the 100 Black Men’s of Savannah Scholarship, and the Burger King Foundation Scholarship.

She also received the following awards over her four years of high school: Dr. Ann Levett’s Superintendent’s Award 2019; The Exchange Club of Savannah Youth of the Month Award – November 2018; The Savannah Arts Academy Zora Neale Hurston Award for the highest English score – 2017; The Savannah Arts Academy Golden Globe Award for World History – 2016; Savannah Outstanding Collaborative Pianist Award – 2017; A Georgia Department of Education 2019 Georgia Scholar for outstanding community work; The Georgia Department of Education International Skill Seal; The Georgia Department of Education Final Arts Seal and Valedictorian of the Class of 2019

Alexis was selected out a pool of 3,000 early decision candidates from around the country to attend Duke University. She plans to attend Duke University in the fall majoring in political science, with the aspiration of one day becoming a lawyer.

In her address to the Class of 2019 at Savannah Art Academy, she encouraged her fellow students to use their unique history to make a difference in the world. She believed that all of us have unique and distinguishing characteristics that we can use to take our communities and our country from good to great.
