United Way Hands On Savannah announces a variety of projects that are open to the community to honor Dr. King’s commitment to service! Be part of the celebration by participating in the following activities planned to honor Dr. King.
Saturday, January 15th 9:00 am – Noon & Sunday, January 16th 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Spend time with family and friends and help plant a tree for the future! Over 250 trees to be planted in the Westlake community – bring your favorite shovel and wear comfy shoes or work boots. Directions: West on Victory Drive. Turn left onto Ogeechee Road/Highway 17. Turn left onto Liberty Parkway and proceed straight at both the Mills B. Lane and Staley Ave. intersections. Turn left onto Westlake Avenue and look for parking on Westlake and Oriole Road.
Sunday, January 16th 7:00 pm AWOL (All Walks of Life) youth will honor Dr. King and his mission through their poetry, art and spoken word at the Sentient Bean on 13 East Park Avenue, Savannah.
Monday, January 17th 8:30 am 1:00 pm “Make it a Day on, Not a Day off!” Join hundreds as Economic Opportunity Authority (EOA) sponsors a neighbor project in Jackson Park that will provide assistance to three families with single parents raising children who will greatly appreciate some helping hands! Volunteers will paint the outside of the three homes, all located in close proximity. Meet at the following location to get a specific assignment: 830 West 53rd Street, Savannah.
Thursday, January 20th, 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm Walk a mile in the shoes of those facing poverty to try to understand the situations and decisions people experience every day. The poverty simulation experience is designed to help participants begin to understand the barriers faced by a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month. This is a simulation, not a game. To participate in this potentially life-changing experience, pre-registration is required, call 912-232-6747 or to volunteer, 912-651.7725. Location: Savannah State University, King-Frazier Student Center Savannah Ballroom.
