The United States Coast Guard National Association of former Stewards and Steardmates, Inc. celebrated their 30th 4-Day Conference Reunion, July 4th through July 7, 2019 at the Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Ga.

A highlight of the conference was Sunday worship with the congregation at Butler Memorial Presbyterian Church located at 603 W Victory Dr. The organization was able to give God the praise for another successful year, their many accomplishments and keeping the legacy alive for those members who are no longer with us. We were reminded that through faith in God, we are able to take on challenges that come before us and be successful.

The organization is affiliated with the late Alex Haley, the author of “Roots”, which part of his story was filmed in Savannah. The following natives of Savannah are members of the U. S. Coast Guard National

Association of former Stewards and Steardmates, Inc.: Nathaniel Copeland, Roland Denegall, Jr. and Walter Ward.

  1. It is wonderful that the organization for stewards and steward mates continues to exist today. My father, Herbert M. Collins, joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939 and served as a Mess Attendant. When he joined he was also on the same ship as the renowed Alex Haley. These men…..who were forced to be servants to white officers….became so much more! Nice to read about this 30th celebration. After serving as a Mess Attendant my father was transferred to the historic Pea Island Station after less than a year.

  2. Would love to connect with them. I’m a retired Lieutenant of the Coast Guard that communicate with a large number of Coast Guard people on a frequent basis. I’m confident a lot of the members I communicate would love to join the organization as honorary guests or whatever status they would accept us. This organization has paved the way for so many members in the Coast Guard past and present. I’m on Facebook as well. Please contact me.
