Top Teens of America off to a Great Start

The Savannah Chapter of Top Teens of America, Incorporated (TTA) held its first meeting of the fiscal year on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the May Street YMCA and was well attended. Lady Eddie Lee Marsh, local President of Top Ladies of Distinction, Incorporated, greeted the members and others who were in attendance.

Teen Ja’Lisa Williams, President of the local chapter, installed the new officers for 2008-2009. They included: First Vice President, Teen Jasmine Williams: Second vice-President, Teen Algernon Aris; Recording Secretary, Teen Caitlin Creech; Financial Secretary, Teen Rakeisha Grant; Corresponding Secretary, Teen Brittany Bell; Treasurer, Teen Kendra Johnson; Chaplain, Teen Charlton Bynum; Parliamentarian, Teen Timeka Johnson; Historian, Teen Morgan Robinson: and Sergeant-At- Arms, Teen Charles Frye.

At this meeting, focal interest was given to grandparents of the membership. Teens honored their respective grandparents by presenting them with a rose. Dr. Prince Jackson, Jr., President of the local chapter of the NAACP, addressed the Teens, Ladies, and grandparents in attendance. He provided the history and purpose of the NAACP which is one of the Teens’ National Projects. The Teens were inspired after listening to Dr. Jackson’s presentation.

The Orientation Session for membership in TTA was held on September 11, 2008 for ten (10) prospective members. Top Teens are delighted when others are interested in becoming members of this service-oriented organization. The Induction Service for the prospective members will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2008.

Fifteen teens, two parents, Ladies DuPont, Mitchell, Lasseter, Brown, and Lord Lasseter canvassed the Cann Park neighborhood on September 13, 2008 in an effort to increase the number of registered voters for the November 4, 2008 election. This effort was most rewarding.

Teen Ja’Lisa Williams, Lexus Johnson, Te’Arra Dunham, along with Ladies Versis DuPont, Annette Mitchell and Theresa Wright, attended the Sickle Cell Luncheon held on September 20, 2008. Sickle Cell is also a National Project of TT A and this event is supported by the members each year. The speaker for the occasion, Mrs. Tishia C. Dobson who is a Sickle Cell patient, informed the group of some of the struggles and pain associated with this disease.

The advisor of the local TT A chapter is Lady Versie M. DuPont. The dedicated assistant advisors are Ladies Deborah Adams, Renee Buckles, Betty Lasseter, Annette Mitchell, Tara Scott- Brown, Corethia Sims, Daisy Williams, and Jacquelyn Singleton.
