The Savannah State men’s basketball team traveled to Atlanta on February 3 and left the capitol city with a 67-62 setback.
Morehouse’s Xavier Brewer hit a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left to give the Maroon Tigers a 65-62 lead. and then added a pair of free throws with a second remaining to seal the win.
Marcus Scott and Rico Bonds combined to make seven of SSU’s eight 3-pointers in the game. Scott made three 3-pointers and finished with 20 points while Bonds hit four 3-pointers and finished the night with 19 points. Andrew Okorodudu had eight rebounds for the Tigers in the loss.
Morehouse traveled to Savannah on Feb. 8 for a rematch and it was just as tight as the first contest as SSU walked away with a 73-66 victory..
SSU led 28-26 at intermission and increased it to 50-40 after a 3-pointer by Scott with 10:09 left in the second half.
The Maroon Tigers responded with a man to man press that led to 13 unanswered points as Morehouse went ahead 53-50 with 8:43 remaining.
Savannah State scored 12 straight points to go ahead 62-53 with just over two minutes left and they never trailed again.
Scott scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the second half while making 10 of 12 free throw attempts. Zion Williams had 13 points, Bonds and Avery Joyner scored 12 points each while Trey Deloach added 10 points, six rebounds and six steals as Savannah State improved to 6-10 overall and 6-7 in the SIAC.
