The Silver Screen Society to Award $2,500 Annually to SCAD Student Filmmaker

The Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, is excited to announce the Silver Screen Society will award a $2,500 cash grant annually for the best short film submitted as an official entry by a SCAD student.

Selected by a juried panel, the winning student filmmaker will be presented the Silver Screen Society Award at the Wednesday evening screening. The 2011 Savannah Film Festival will be held Oct. 29 through Nov. 5.

For the past seven years, the Silver Screen Society has awarded more than $30,000 in cash grants to SCAD student filmmakers. The organization’s mission is to educate students about the filmmaking process and reward exceptional performance.

The society was cofounded by film and television producer Barry Rosenbush and Landings resident Dean Ayers, members of the film festival board of advisors.

Since its inception in 1998, the Savannah Film Festival has focused on enriching and educating an expanding audience, while promoting quality independent films and filmmakers.

The festival features more than 50 films, selected from more than 600 entries in the categories of feature, short, animation, documentary and student competition, which are submitted from all over the world. The featured screenings represent a variety of independent filmmakers, while a cross section of workshops, lectures, receptions and special events gives the festival participants an opportunity to meet colleagues active in all areas of film production.

Past honored guests have included Sir Ian McKellen, Liam Neeson, Isabella Rossellini, Hugh Dancy, Jeremy Renner, Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta- Jones, Peter O’Toole, Kathleen Turner, Sydney Pollack, Alan Cumming, Roger Ebert, Jane Fonda, John Waters, Danny Glover, Alec Baldwin, Natasha Richardson and Ellen Burstyn.
