The Savannah community mourns the loss of a local attorney and civil rights champion, Sage Brown. He passed away Saturday morning after a battle with leukemia. He was 68 years old.
Brown was among the few to change the face of public education in Chatham County. In 1963 he and 19 other African American students integrated the Savannah Chatham County School System .
Brown along with George Shinhoster and 5 others entered all white Groves High School in September 1963. It was their senior year and they fought a year long battle of verbal and sometimes physical abuse. Brown was one of the foot soldiers in the sit-ins and demonstrations held in Savannah.
He was also a decorated war hero. He earned two Purple Hearts during three combat tours in Vietnam. Brown joined Georgia Bar Association in January 1978.
He is survived by his wife and six children. Sidney A. Jones-Campbell Funeral Services are in charge of funeral arrangements which were not complete at press time.
