On Sunday, the 8th of December 2019 at the King Frazier Student Center at 5:00 p.m. at Savannah State University, The Board of Directors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Day Association, Inc. cordially invites you, our sponsors, supporters, and friends to attend the MLK annual reception as we pay tribute to our 2019 Honorees great achievements.
Our Marshals include Mrs. Maxine Patterson, an outstanding Dance instructor in the Savannah Community. Our second Marshal is Lieutenant John A. White, Jr. the first African American to be sworn in as a police officer in May, 1947.
Our Civil Rights Activist is Mr. George E. Shinhoster, who came of age in the civil turbulence of the 1960s.
A native of Savannah, Ga., he was one of the first African Americans to desegregate a high school and college in Savannah. He worked with the Chatham County Crusade for Voters to register black citizens to become voters. In the heat of the civil rights struggle, Mr. Shinhoster worked with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, as a field organizer.
The King Association is honored to recognize Mr. Lang as our first honoree with our Trailblazer Award, for his outstanding contributions in enriching the lives of our youth and his positive impact on our community.
Our 2020 Theme is “Dr. King’s Non-Negotiables: Non-Violence, equality, Peace and Love.”
Our Theme Winners are 1st Place Winner: Neveah Macon (Oglethorpe Academy – 6th Grade), 2nd Place Winner: Shawn Ransom (Windsor Forest Elementary – 5th Grade), and 3rd Place Winner: Camille Moore (West Chatham Middle School – 8th Grade).
