The 5th Annual Savannah Urban Arts Festival will take place April 21-28 at venues throughout the city. As always, the festival will celebrate the talent and diversity of national and regional artists during a week’s worth of events that includes live performances, workshops, exhibits, panel discussions and more.

The fifth anniversary of SUAF will be the year of the DJ for the festival, including several workshop opportunities, a DJ battle and much more. This year’s featured artist will be international DJ Jefferey Tonnesen, who circled the globe playing club residencies and high profile events such as the Venice Biennale. As is the tradition with all of SUAF’s featured artists, Tonnesen will conduct workshops with local youth and then give a performance during the festival. Another highlight of SUAF’s celebration of the DJ will be a DJ battle on Saturday night. The battle will feature DJs from Savannah, North Florida and Atlanta competing for the title. In addition to the battle, there will be live music all evening, starting on an outdoor stage at Congress Street Social Club and then moving indoors later. There will also be a DJ workshop that’s open to the public, which will be hosted by several local DJs — so if you’ve ever wanted to learn a little bit about the wheels of steel, SUAF will provide the perfect opportunity.

In addition to the celebration of the DJ, another important theme in this year’s festival will be food. As a community-based festival, SUAF has always made it a goal to intermingle social issues with all of the art, culture and entertainment. On Monday night, there will be a community panel on food justice at the Creative Coast’s office. On Wednesday night will be Loop It Up Savannah’s “Big Beautiful Food Project” which has grown out of foodrelated projects at the West Broad Street YMCA. We’d be remiss not to show some love to hometown cuisine though, so Miss Sally the Gullah Diva will be on-site cooking during Jeffery Tonnesen’s performance on Thursday night of the festival.
