Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes Campaign Kicks-Off

The 20th Annual American Diabetes Association’s Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes fundraising campaign kicks off with a patriotic-themed team captain rally on Tuesday, August 28 at 5:30 p.m.at Betty Bomber’s at the American Legion at 1108 Bull Street in downtown Savannah.

This event is free and open to the public. Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes is the ADA’s fall signature campaign and is being chaired by Colonel George Bowen, a respected community leader, longtime ADA supporter and retired Air Force officer. According to Bowen, “I have worked with ADA in the past but decided to take on a larger role this year. The reason I wanted to chair this campaign is because I lost a Chatham County government colleague to diabetes not long ago. I didn’t even know he had diabetes until the day he died from complications at the age of 50. That hit me pretty hard and I want to do my part to get people to pay attention to diabetes, which is nothing short of a public health crisis in this community.”

The Kick-Off/Team Rally will feature a short presentation from people who have lived successfully with diabetes for a long time. Attendees will hear from successful fundraising teams and learn about upcoming special events to benefit the campaign.

Kick-off attendees will also learn how to form a walk team for the walk. The Step Out Walk will be held on Saturday, October 6 at the newly renovated Oatland Island Wildlife Center.

The 2-mile route winds through nature trails and past wildlife exhibits. The Step Out event will also feature a Health & Fitness Festival with free blood glucose & blood pressure screenings, fitness information and professional on-site advice on medications along with free literature on a variety of health topics. Funds raised for this event benefit the mission of the American Diabetes Association.
