Members of the State Bar of Georgia Young Lawyers Division (YLD) Leadership Academy visited the West Broad Street YMCA on Friday, April 16, and presented donations of athletic equipment, computers, gift cards, cash and other supplies to meet the YMCA’s greatest needs. The service project is one of dozens across Georgia initiated by young lawyers as part of the YLD’s 2009-10 theme of supporting children and families.
Peter Doliber, Executive Director and CEO of the West Broad Street YMCA, said that prior to the Georgia young lawyers’ donations, his organization did not have the necessary equipment to begin its spring/summer sports programs. Because of the contributions of the Leadership Academy members, however, the Y was able to launch its T-Ball season the next day. The two laptop computers that were donated will be used in the Y’s library branch, which is used for school homework by many children who do not have a computer at home. The $500 in gift cards and additional cash donations will purchase a new refrigerator needed in the Y’s daycare program to refrigerate milk for bottlefed babies.
The Leadership Academy members also spent the afternoon helping organize and assemble equipment for the Y’s exercise room, preparing gift bags with snacks and materials they had purchased for approximately 200 children to be presented on “Healthy Kids Day” and acquiring a new tool kit for the Y facility. “I have to say that rarely have I, and I believe I can speak for the rest of the group present, ever felt like such a small gesture made such a big difference in the lives of so many,” said Sharri Edenfield of Statesboro, who along with Carl Varnedoe of Macon co-chairs the YLD Leadership Academy Committee.
In a letter to the Leadership Academy group, Doliber said, “Where do we even begin to say thank you?
We were totally overwhelmed by the generosity and support from your folks. You were all an answer to prayer.
The kids and our families will benefit so much, you have no idea. Please know that we are ever grateful. And you are all welcome back anytime!”
