The officers and members of St. Philip A.M.E. Church are inviting everyone to join us as we welcome and celebrate the arrival of our new pastor, Reverend Jai Haithco, Sr. This special event will be held on Saturday July 6th at the church from 4 to 6 PM. Rev. Haithco was born and reared in Saginaw, Michigan, the third of three children to William and Nancy Haithco. He became very active in Church as an Acolyte, singing in the youth choir, chief usher of the youth usher board, president of the Young People’s Department, president of the Explorer’s Post, and a member of the Junior Steward Board which was the beginning of his lay ministry.
After graduating from Bridgeport High School as a three-sport athlete in Football, Wrestling, and Track, he received an academic scholarship to attend Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) in Hampton, Virginia. While at Hampton, he became an All-Conference 400 meter hurdler on the varsity Track team, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., a member of the Business Club, voted Mr. Senior of his class, and graduated with a B.S. degree in Marketing.
Upon graduation from Hampton Institute, he worked for a number of corporations including Procter & Gamble, Radio Shack, Phillips Business College, University of Virginia Hospital, Crawford Long Hospital, Diverse Computer Technology, Gateway Computers, and Dekalb County School System. He has also served as a consultant to the National Conference of Black Mayors, Fulton County Juvenile Detention Center, and Dekalb County’s Peach Program training 1200 families from Welfare to Work.
In 1984, he accepted his Call to Ministry at Bethel A.M.E. Church in Hampton, Virginia and enrolled in Virginia Union University School of Theology. He was appointed pastor to Marshall Chapel A.M.E. Church in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1985 and graduated from Virginia Union in 1988 with a Masters of Divinity Degree.
While pastoring throughout Virginia, he also worked in the areas of Education, Banking, and Healthcare. In 1991, he moved to Georgia to pursue greater opportunities in ministry. While in Georgia, he has continued pastoring and working in the areas of Healthcare, Business, and Education. He married Brenda Young who is a Human Resource Consultant and has one son, Jai S. Haithco, II.
From 2006 to 2012, Rev. Haithco was appointed the Director of Christian Education for the Sixth Episcopal District, which comprises the entire state of Georgia. He was also accepted at Turner Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center in the Master of Arts in Christian Education (M.A.C.E.) program and graduated May 2011 with highest honors.
Rev. Haithco is now serving as the pastor of St. Philip A.M.E. Church in Savannah, Georgia; President Elect of Turner Theological Seminary Alumni Association; Sixth Episcopal District Christian Education Director, Former Member of the Board of Trustees and Board of Examiners of the Atlanta North Georgia Annual Conference for the Sixth Episcopal District; Chaplain of the Fellowship of Church Educators; Chaplain of the Southeast Region of the Hampton University Alumni Association; and is also a recent graduate with a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in the area of Curriculum and Instruction from Argosy University in Atlanta, Georgia. It is his desire to teach on a graduate level in the area of Christian Education to assist young men and women in pursuing their call to the Christian ministry.
