St. Andrew’s Keeps Youth Engaged During the Summer

The St. Andrew’s Community Outreach Center began a summer youth program working with boys in the community between the ages of 9-18 years of age. The goal of the center is to help pull our youth from the streets and give them positive activities for the summer months. A Community Youth Basketball Team was organized called “The Hawks”.

For the summer months the team has traveled to play other communities in Statesboro, Ga. including the Williams James Middle School, and the the Boys and Girl Club.

They have also traveled to Savannah Ga. to Play the Savannah Hurricanes at the Boys and Girls Club. The Team has participated in Carnivals in Statesboro and yet is scheduled for more Games in Sylvania.

Plans for the Team is to attend Splash In the Boro, a week end of camping and a program that will be geared toward helping them to excel in School.

An Award banquet was held on August 1 at Austin Hall in Sylvania Ga .

Each youth that participated in the summer program was given a certificate and a trophy for there participation.

The Team has a great coaching staff which consists of Stanley Edwards, Phillip Simon, Reginald McDonald, Norman Warren, Johnny Winston, Mr. Gene Scarboro (School Bus Transportation).

Mr. Jim Thompson at Screven Middle School has allowed the team to practice and host games in there Gym. The Board of Education has provided transportation for the youth and thanks is not enough!

The Team receives great support from parents and others in the community. Our plans are to continue to work with the youth providing intervention to help build character among male youth in our community.
