SSU to host August BizCamp for Youth at Moses Jackson Center

Savannah State University, in partnership with the city of Savannah, will host its first BizCamp from 12:30-3:30 p.m., Aug. 8- 12, for middle-school and high-school students attending the Moses Jackson Advancement Center (MJAC) summer program.

The camp will use an innovative curriculum created by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) to teach students how to turn their great ideas into successful businesses.

The young entrepreneurs will present completed business plans at 1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 12, to a panel of judges from the business, government and education fields. The student with the best business plan will receive a cash prize that can be used toward starting their business. The community is invited to attend BizCamp competition day.

NFTE is considered the premier youth entrepreneurial education program in the country and has been featured by several media outlets, including the “Wall Street Journal,” “New York Times” and CNN.

Paul Smith, a certified NFTE instructor and business professor at Newberry College in Newberry, S.C., will lead the camp workshops. Smith was the 2009 recipient of NFTE’s Entrepreneurial Teacher of the Year Award.

The project is funded by a grant to Savannah State from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide entrepreneurial training to youth and adults living in Savannah’s westside neighborhoods. The MJAC, located at 1410-B Richards St., is a city of Savannah facility that opened in September 2010 to provide services that support the academic and economic advancement of families. SSU is of one of many community partners providing services at the center.
