SSU Opens Outdoor Track & Field Season


The Savannah State University Track & Field team opened their 2012 season Saturday by hosting the annual Savannah State Eyeopener. The Tigers took top honors in six of the women’s events and seven of the men’s events.

Savannah State senior Amara Jones took first place in the 200m dash with a time of 24.32, followed by teammate Jade Bentley with a time of 25.32. Asia Stinson placed fourth in the 200m with a time of 25.39, and took top honors in the 100m dash with a time of 12.10.

Jones also captured the 400m dash with a time of 56.52. Chavonta Roberts placed second with a 57.93. Aleah Hordges captured third with a time of 58.54 and Jazy Seay-Blane was fourth with a time of 59.32.

The Lady Tigers team of Stinson, Jones, Roberts and Hordges won the 4x100m relay with a time of 46.75. Clark Atlanta’s team of Asia McClain, Jarriyauna Jarboe, Ashley Ellis, and Kendra Wiggins placed 2nd with a time of 50.48.

Chantia Taylor tied for first place with Clark Atlanta’s Jo Prince-Coleman in the women’s high jump, both with a distance of 1.42m. In the women’s long jump, Savannah State took first and second place. Rajeanne Jarrett took top honors with a distance of 5.64m, followed by Jaymi White with a distance of 5.47m.

Kimberly Wilson placed first in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 12.00m. Amber Hughes placed second with a distance of 11.68m. Taylor finished third with a distant of 11.15m, followed by Jarrett in fifth with a distance of 10.61m.

On the men’s side, Savannah State’s Darrius Baker placed first in the 100m dash with a time of 10.82, followed by teammate Gregory Terrell with a time of 10.88.

Baker also won the 200m dash with a time of 21.97. Chazwyn Price placed second with a time of 22.01, and placed first in the 400m dash with a time of 49.00.

In the men’s 800m run, Etchien Assinzo finished first with a time of 1:58.00. Followed by SCAD’s To Koetsenruijter, who finished with a time of 1:59.34. Ruben Isreal-McBee placed second in the 5000m run with a time of 15:35.30. Jacob Law of Mercer won the event with a time of 15:27.16.

Felton Chinn won the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.11 for Savannah State. In the men’s 4x100m relay, the Savannah State team of Terrell, Baker, Prince and Cameron hall took first with a time of 41.51. The team of Chinn, Lemaar Chakir, Terrell and Kristopher Ballou placed second in the 4×400 with a time of 3:27.08.

In the men’s high jump, Assinzo placed second with a distance of 1.73m. Justin Taylor won the men’s Triple Jump with a distance of 14.59m for the Tigers.
