Savannah State University’s National Alumni Association (SSUNAA) has announced the Queens for 2009. They are: Melba Archie, Miss SSUNAA, Linda James, First Attendant, and Barbara McGhee, Second Attendant the Melba Bruce Archie is a 1974 graduate of Savannah State with a major in Textile and Clothing. A native of Albany, Ga., Melba is a retired clothing designer of the MCLB, Albany, Ga . She presently enjoys retirement and occasionally works in the Dougherty County School System. Melba is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie L. Bruce of Albany, Ga. She is the mother of two lovely daughters, Mellany M. Archie (Macon, Ga) and Melisa D. Archie (Montgomery, Ala).
A 1976 Savannah State graduate, Linda Strong- James received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She pursued graduate studies in a joint program at the University of Alabama and Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, Alabama, obtaining a Master of Science degree in microbiology.
Strong-James is currently an administrative faculty in the School of Medicine (SOM) at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG). Barbara Lawson McGhee, a 1966 graduate, is a product of the Waycross Public School System (Center High School) in Waycross, Georgia. She graduated from Savannah State College (now university) with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and received the M Ed in Middle Grade Education from Savannah State- Armstrong State Joint Graduate Program.She is an active Diamond Life member of the Savannah State University Alumni Association. She serves as Financial Secretary of the Savannah Chapter.
She is married to William McGhee, the joy of her life. She says her greatest job assignment was that of being a parent, and she thanks God for the pleasure.
