Savannah State University’s “Coastal Empire Sound Explosion” is one of 45 historically black college and university (HBCU) marching bands pursuing a chance to perform at the 2011 Honda Battle of the Bands (HBOB) Invitational Showcase, scheduled to take place Jan. 29, 2011, at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

As in previous years, showcase bands are chosen by fan votes. To register and vote for the Savannah State marching band, fans should visit the HBOB website at www.hondabattleofthebands. com. Votes may be cast once per day, per registered e-mail address until the end of the voting period at midnight Oct. 29.

The eight official finalist bands will be announced Nov. 8. All 45 bands in the running will receive a $1,000 grant for their musical programs, while each showcase band will receive an additional $20,000 and an invitation to the January showcase event.

Established nine years ago to highlight the heritage, showmanship and unique talents of HBCU marching bands, the HBOB showcase is considered the world’s largest and most highly anticipated HBCU musical event of its kind.

The Savannah State marching band was invited to the showcase in 2004 and 2005, where it performed before soldout Georgia Dome crowds and earned a $10,000 award each year.

Established in 1890, Savannah State University is on the move to become the best value-added university in the nation.

Approximately 3,800 students are enrolled in 23 undergraduate degree majors and five graduate programs in three colleges: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology.
