Savannah State University celebrated their 183rd Commencement Saturday, December 7th at Tigers Arena. This was a jubilant time as the SSU December graduating class of 2013 celebrated the fruits of their hard labor and accomplishments with SSU faculty, staff, students, family and friends. More than 20% of the graduates had a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a sizable portion of the students finished in 4 years or less, a significant accomplishment.
The commencement speaker for this illustrious ceremony was Lawrence M. Drake, II, President and CEO of LEAD, a global knowledge and experiential learning organization that enables youth of diverse backgrounds to convert high potential into high achievement and responsible leadership. Drake delivered an inspirational speech that encouraged students to write their own history and not let anyone do it for them. Drake also encouraged students to become leaders in their communities.
Among the notable graduates were Kendal A. Duff, Brian E. Holloway, Darrius Chisholm and Smiljana Cuk. Kendal A. Duff received the December 2013 President’s Second Mile Award. The award recognizes stellar student leadership on campus and in the Savannah community. Duff is a Savannah native who was a member of several on and off campus organizations. Duff is also the 4th member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. to receive to the President’s Second Mile Award since May 2001.
Duff is a cum laude Criminal Justice graduate. Brian E. Holloway graduated cum laude in Behavior Analysis and is also a Cannon Crewmember 13b of the Unites States Army. Darrius Chisholm graduated cum laude in Management and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant for the United States Army. Smiljana Cuk is a native of Serbia. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Computer Science Technology. Cuk delivered a powerful and encouraging reflection during the commencement ceremony. Cuk was also a star basketball player for the SSU Tigers Women’s Basketball team.
