The Savannah State University football program has added two new coaches to this year’s staff, the athletic department announced this afternoon. The Tigers’ cornerbacks will be helmed by Corey Barlow, while the linebackers will be coached by David Roberson.
Barlow enters his first year at Savannah State after five years as the linebackers coach at the University of Alabama Birmingham.
Prior to UAB, Barlow coached at the University of Rhode Island for one year as the defensive backs coach, Morehouse College for three years as the defensive backs coach, and one year at Southside High School in Atlanta, Ga. as the defensive backs coach.
Barlow, an Atlanta, Georgia native, is a former All-American cornerback at Auburn University where he lettered four years (1988- 1991). He was named to Auburn’s All-Decade team for the 1990’s and was captain of the 1991 team. He was named “Most Valuable Defensive Player” of the 1991 team.
During his four years at Auburn, Barlow earned All- SEC honors in 1990 and 1991, and garnered All- American accolades as a senior following the 1991 season. He played in the 1988 Sugar Bowl, 1989 Hall of Fame Bowl, and the 1990 Peach Bowl. After his senior season, he played in the Blue-Gray All-Star Game and the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.
Barlow was selected in the fifth round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played three seasons as an Eagle.
Roberson comes to SSU from Pennsylvania State University, where he served under legendary head coach Joe Paterno as the offensive quality control coach since 2011. He also served under Bill O’Brien during his tenure at Penn State.
Prior to Penn State, Roberson was a part of a very successful Southern Mississippi football program, which was led by head coach Larry Fedora. During his time at Southern Mississippi, Roberson worked as a defensive assistant under defensive line coach Deke Adams.
He also worked as special teams coach, recruiting coordinator, and linebackers coach for Notre Dame College (NDC) of Ohio.
The additions round out the coaching staff for SSU football as they head into the upcoming 2012 season. The Tigers open the season in Stillwater, Oklahoma as they pay a visit to Oklahoma State University, September 1, 2012.
