Savannah State men’s basketball coach Horace Broadnax is one of 21 finalists for the 2012 Ben Jobe Award. The Ben Jobe Award is presented annually to the top minority coach in Division I men’s basketball. Coach Jobe is best known as the head coach of the Southern University, a position he held for 12 seasons. He has also been a head coach at Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Talladega, Tuskegee and South Carolina State.
SSU Starts Spring Football
The Savannah State football team began spring football practice on March 21 at 3:30 pm. Spring drills will end with the annual spring game on April 7. The Tigers are coming off a 1-9 season and lost 16 seniors. Among the biggest losses was Justin Babb who had 1,303 all-purpose yards. Although SSU has yet to release their 2012 schedule, the Tigers are scheduled to open the season with FBS heavyweights Oklahoma State and Florida State.
Tigers Fall To Tennessee In NIT

Tennessee in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament on March 13 on the UT campus at Thompson-Boling Arena before a crowd of 6,289. The Tigers dug a deep hole for themselves in the first half as Tennessee jumped out to a 10-0 lead. The Volunteer lead increased to 26-9 with just over seven minutes left in the half but SSU whittled their deficit to 32-24 at intermission. SSU trailed by as many as 11 early in the second period before answering with nine straight points to get within two. With the score 37-35, UT scored eight unanswered points and SSU could not get any closer than seven the rest of the way. Preston Blackmon added 14 points and five assist for the Tigers. SSU ends the season 21-12.
SSU Spring Sports Round-Up
The Savannah State track teams ran in the Shamrock Invitational on March 16 & 17 hosted by Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, SC. Amara Jones won the women’s 400m and was 2nd
in the 200m races. Chaz Price led the SSU men with a 6th place finish in the 400m; the SSU baseball team downed Charleston Southern 3-2 on the road on March 14 and took a three-game series from Florida A&M over the weekend in Tallahassee, FL. SSU won the first game of a double-header 9-2 but lost the nightcap 10-1 on March 17. SSU won the series with a 12-6 victory on March 18; the SSU softball went 2-4 last week. The Lady Tigers traveled to Huntsville, AL on March 13 and lost to Kentucky State (2-1) and Eastern Illinois (8-3). SSU hosted the SSU Classic on March 16 & 17. Savannah State swept Morgan State 3- 2 and 3-0 on March 16 but lost to the Bears the following day 11-9. Later in the day, Alabama State defeated the Lady Tigers 3-0; the SSU women’s golf team finished in third out of six schools in the Taylor Made – Adidas Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held March 11- 13 in Dataw Island, SC and participated in the FAMU Spring Invitational held March 16-18. The SSU men’s team finished 8th in the Don Benbow Golf Invitational in Jacksonville, FL on March 11-13 and placed 4th at the FAMU Spring Invitational held March 16-18 in Tallahassee. The SSU women’s tennis squad played two matches on Hilton Head Island last week, losing to Gardner- Webb 7-0 on March 12 and falling to Sienna State 5-2 on March 13.
