Tigers Lose To
After winning a two-game home series against Mercer in Savannah in late March, Savannah State traveled to Macon on April 7 and dropped a double-header to the Bears 10-9 and 15-4. SSU traveled to Durham, NC to play a three-game series with North Carolina Central on April 10 and 11. SSU dropped the first game of a double-header on April 10 by a 7-6 score but bounced back to win the second game 17-3. The Tigers finished off NCCU 14-8 on April 11 to even their record at 16-16.
SSU Softball Splits
The Savannah State softball team split a double-header with North Carolina Central on April 10 in Durham. The Lady Tigers fell 6-3 in the opener but defeated NCCU 5- 4 in the nightcap as Tiffany Taylor’s single scored Shamya Adams in the 7th inning. SSU’s record is now 15-16.
Tigers Run at SC
The Savannah State track team participated in the 39th Robert “Jet” Johnson Bulldog Relays hosted by South Carolina State on April 10. The SSU men placed fourth with 55 points while the SSU women were third with 66 points. Amber Wright won the women’s triple jump for SSU. Finishing in second were Latasha Wright (400m hurdles), the women’s 4x200m relay team, Reuben Isreal-McBee (5000m), the men’s 4x400m relay team, the men’s distance medley team and Shawn Souvenir (triple jump). Third place honors went to Alisha Nelson (high jump), Sharonda Redfield (triple jump), Brandon Norman (110m hurdles), men’s 4x100m relay team and Kendall Woumnm (high jump).
SSU Football Has
The Savannah State football team completed their spring practices with the annual Blue & Orange spring game. Held on April 11 at T. A. Wright Stadium, the Orange team won 18-6 as Derek Williams booted field goals of 34, 36, 42 and 36 yards. AJ DeFillippis passed for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His lone interception was picked off by Vince Cochran and returned 49 yards for a touchdown. Thomas Beaurem ran for 43 yards on seven carries while Alakan Thomas caught four passes and 34 yards and a 12-yard touchdown. Richie Rucker led the defense with nine tackles.
