Worthen Leads SSU Golf

Dominique Worthen shot 229 and finished tied for 11th to lead Savannah State to a 8th place finish at the Coca-Cola Intercollegiate played at the Hunter Golf Club on March 12-13. Worthern shot 75, 76 and 78 to finish +13. The Tigers had a team score of 947 (308+309+330). Vonnetta Epps represented the SSU women and shot 219 (108+111).

Sovnenir, Jones Power SSU Track Team

Shawn Sovnenir and Amara Jones both won two events to pace Savannah State at the Palmetto Classic hosted by The Citadel on March 12. Sovnenir won the men’s long jump and triple jump while Jones won the women’s 200m and 400m race. Other winners for SSU were the women’s 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay, Alisha Nelson (high jump), Sharonda Redfield (triple jump), Eric Plump (200m), Quentre Shannon (110m hurdles) and the men’s 4x400m relay.

Tiger Baseball Splits With FAMU

After having their game with USC-Beaufort rained out on March 11 and losing 10-5 at Florida A&M on March 13, Savannah State bounced back to split the weekend series by beating the Rattlers 15-8 on March 14 in Tallahassee, FL.

Tigers Making the Grade

During the fall semester, 75 Savannah State student-athletes did well in the classroom. 39 made the honor roll, 32 made the dean’s list while four qualified for the president’s list by making all A’s. Breaking down each sport, 12 football players made the honor roll, nine baseball players made the dean’s list and two football players made the president’s list.

Hassan Earns Basketball Honor

Savannah State sophomore forward Rashad Hassan has earned second team All- Independent honors for his play during the 2009-10 season. The 6-7 Riverdale, GA native averaged 11 points and 5.5 rebounds and led the team with 23 blocks.
