Tome Earns SIAC Honor

Savannah State kicker and punter Henry Tome was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, following the Tigers game against Lane College on November 5.

A sophomore from Beaufort, South Carolina, Tome helped Savannah State to a 44-38 win over Lane, punting six times and averaging 37.5 yards a punt with two landing inside the 20-yard line. His longest was a 58-yarder.

Tome’s 34-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter sent the teams into intermission tied at 24.

Langston Named To All-SIAC Volleyball Team

women’s volleyball outside hitter Destinee Langston has been named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team, the conference office announced on November 10.

Langston was also the recipient of this year’s Elite 14 award which recognizes student-athletes who have reached the pinnacle of competition at the SIAC championship level while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers.

Langston, who played in all 23 matches and 78 sets, concluded the regular season at the top of the offensive stats for SSU with 246 kills, averaging 3.15 kills per set. She led the team in points (275.5), and was third in digs with 212, averaging 2.72 a set.

She led the SIAC in attacks per set and was ranked No. 6 in points per set (3.53) and kills per set (3.15). A junior in the classroom, the accounting major has a 4.0 GPA.

Lady Tigers Tip Off Basketball Season

The Savannah State women’s basketball team tipped off their 2022- 23 season by participating the Lady Bears Tip Off Classic which was hosted by Miles College on November 11-12.

SSU started their new campaign with a 88-70 victory over Oakwood on Nov. 11 followed by a 62-57 win over Miles on Nov. 12.

Oakwood led the Lady Tigers 23-15 after one quarter of play but SSU stormed back to take a 40-35 lead into the half. Oakwood outscored Savannah State 24-18 in the third quarter to take a one point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Clinging to a four point lead with six and a half minutes left, SSU strung together a 16-5 run to put the game out of reach.

Bria Gibbs led five SSU players in double figures with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The contest with Miles was a tight one. The scored was tied at intermission (34-34) and at the end of the third quarter (46-46).

Miles led by seven with 6:42 remaining but SSU used a 12-0 run to take a 60-55 lead with ten seconds remaining to earn the win.

Amari Heard had 16 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks for Savannah State as four Lady Tigers scored in double figures.

Phoenix Leads Benedict To SIAC Football Title

Savannah native Eric Phoenix completed 19 of 29 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 91 yards and a score to lead Benedict College to a 58-21 victory over Tuskegee in the SIAC Championship on November 12 in a game played in Columbia, South Carolina.

The win gives Benedict a 11-0 record on the season as they head to the Division II playoffs. It was the Tigers first ever win over Tuskegee (8-3) in 15 attempts.

Phoenix had touchdown passes of 26 and 14 yards while running for a two yard score to opening the scoring in the game.

Benedict led 21-7 after the first quarter and 42-14 at the half. The Tigers outscored Tuskegee 13-0 in the third quarter but Tuskegee won the fourth quarter battle 7-3.

Benedict had 573 yards of offense in the game while its defense had seven sacks and held Tuskegee to 41 yards of rushing.

Savannah State alumnus Chennis Berry is the head coach at Benedict while offensive line coach Roscoe Byrd spent the 2021 season as the Savannah State offensive line coach.
