Tigers Fall To NC
Kurvin Curry had 254 yards of offense but it was not enough as Savannah State lost the final game of the 2009 season at North Carolina Central 35-14 on November 21. The crowd of 4,765 at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium saw Curry pass for 173 yards and a touchdown and run for 81 yards and a touchdown. Curry ran for a 8 yard touchdown to tie the game at 7 late in the first quarter and threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Deleon Hollinger in the 3rd quarter to cut SSU’s deficit to 21-14. The Eagles (4-7) scored two touchdowns in the 4th quarter to put SSU (2-8) away. Hollinger caught 8 passes for 92 yards for the Tigers while Antwan Allen and Jevontae Jefferson had 7 tackles apiece.
Lady Down SE
Darice Fountaine scored 20 points and had 7 rebounds to lead Savannah State (3-2) to a 60-50 win over Southeastern Louisiana at Tiger Arena on November 22. Crissa Jackson added 15 points for Savannah State. SSU jumped out to a 23- 8 lead and led 29-14 at the half. Southeastern cut their deficit to 9 in the second half but a 11-2 run by SSU gave them a 40-22 edge with 15:23 left. Florida A&M defeated SSU 41-38 at Tiger Arena on Nov. 19. Fountaine came off the bench to score 12 points in a losing effort and Jackson scored 11 points. The Lady Tigers crushed Allen 78-38 at Tiger Arena on Nov. 17 as 6-7 freshman Reynetta Phillips came off the bench to score 12 points. Alishia Nelson also scored 12 points and Brittany Gilbert chipped in 10 points.
SSU Men Defeat
Savannah State used a 7-0 run midway in the game to spark a 53-45 win over Central Connecticut State in Tiger Arena on November 16. Rashad Hassan scored 11 points and had 7 rebounds while Tracy Rankins added 10 points and six boards. SSU fell at North Florida 57-46 on Nov. 18 as the Ospreys opened the second half with a 11-0 and never looked back. Rankins had 17 points and 4 assists for the Tigers. 3,176 fans flocked to Tiger Arena to watch SSU host Georgetown on Nov. 21. SSU held its own in the early going jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Hoyas answered with a 21- 4 run and went on to win 63-44. Freshman Darius Baugh came off the bench to lead the Tigers (2-2) with 10 points while Rankins had 9.
Beach’s Greene Inks
Charmine Greene of Beach High School was one of 2 players to sign a letter of intent to play basketball at Savannah State last week. Greene, a 6-1 post player averaged 8 points, 9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks for the Lady Bulldogs. Also signing was Ezinne Kalu, a 5-8 point guard from Science park High School in Newark, New Jersey. Kalu averaged 27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals last season and scored over 30 points in 10 games. Kalu is ranked the 81st best point guard in the nation.
