Tigers Win Opener
Savannah State opened up a close game with a 10-2 run and went on to defeat Webber International 65-51 at Tiger Arena on November 13 before a crowd of 1,344. Louis Arnold had 16 points and 13 rebounds while Tracy Rankins added 12 points and Rashad Hassan scored 11. SSU (1-0) led by two midway in the game but a 16-4 run gave them a 14 point lead with just over five minutes left. The warriors battled back to trim their deficit to six with 3:37 remaining but SSU’s closed the game with their 10-2 run to seal the win.
SSU Women Top Edward Waters
Savannah State overcame a six point deficit with just under 12 minutes remaining and went on to defeat Edward Waters 48-42 at Tiger Arena on November 13. Crissa Jackson came off the bench to lead SSU with nine points. Alisha Nelson added 13 rebounds, eight points, five blocks and four steals. The Lady Tigers fell to South Carolina State 60- 50 on November 15 in Orangeburg, SC. SSU fell behind by 20 points in the first half but went on a 22-6 run to pull within four with just over 13 minutes left. A late run by the Bulldogs gave the ho,e team a 12 point cushion with just over a minute left. Jackson had 13 points for Savannah State (1-1) and Darice Fountain added 10 while Nelson had 10 rebounds to go with her eight points. Raven James had nine points and eight boards.
Webber, Moise Defeat SSU
Torrence Moise accounted for five touchdowns as Webber International (4-6) defeated Savannah State 35-20 at TA Wright Stadium on November 14. Moise threw scoring passes of 44, 20, 11 and 26 yards and ran for a 35 yard score late in the fourth quarter. Moise finished the game with 107 rushing yards and 276 passing yards. SSU led 7-0 after Kurvin Curry threw a 21 yard touchdown pass to Windsor Forest graduate Stefan Taylor. Derek Williams kicked field goals of 42 and 29 yards to cut Webber’s lead to 14-13 with 2:32 left in the second quarter. Webber led 21-13 at the half. The warriors increased their lead to 28-13 in the fourth before Curry threw a 5 yard touchdown pass to Deleon Hollinger with 8:59 left. Antwan Allen and Vince Cochran each had seven tackles for SSU (2-7) while Ricky Rivera caught two passes for 49 yards. Curry ran for 55 yards and threw for 171.
NCCU Beats Winston-Salem State
North Carolina Central (3-7) scored both of its touchdowns following Winston- Salem State turnovers in an 18-10 victory in front of 11,232 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. NCCU’s defense forced four WSSU (1-9) turnovers (two interceptions, two fumble recoveries). Winston-Salem State led 10-9 in the second quarter but the Eagles scored a touchdown with 55 seconds left in the first half and added a field goal midway in the fourth quarter. Michael Johnson passed for 111 yards for NCCU and Tim Shankle ran for 80 yards.
Albany State Falls In D-II Playoffs
West Alabama defeated Albany State 24-22 in the first round of the Division II playoffs in Albany, GA on Nov. 14 as the Rams’ Juan Bongarra missed a field goal with 16 seconds left. Earlier in the quarter, West Alabama blocked two ASU field goal attempts. ASU quarterback AJ McKenna passed for 153 yards
