Savannah State 50 Livingstone 6

Savannah State rolled up 495 yards of offense while its defense held their opponent to less than 100 yards in a 50-6 win over visiting Livingstone in a game played at T.A. Wright Stadium on September 11, 2012.

The win improved the Tigers to 1-1 on the young season while Livingstone remained winless at 0-2.

Neither team was able to score in the first quarter but SSU made up for it in the second quarter by putting 30 points on the scoreboard for the crowd of 3,652.

Backup quarterback JT Hartage came in and threw a 33 yard touchdown pass to Einaj Carter with 11:29 showing on the clock for a 7-0 lead. Livingstone fumbled the kickoff and SSU recovered which led to Hartage scoring on a 24 yard run for a 14-0 advantage with 10:21 left in the quarter.

SSU found paydirt on their next three drives with D’Vonn Gibbions scoring on a three yard run, Carter catching a 34 yard touchdown pass from Hartage and Ken Lockhart booting a 20 yard field goal for a 30-0 lead.

The Tigers scored once in the third quarter as Gibbons threw a 13 yard touchdown to DeMarion Colbert with 4:32 showing for a 37-0 cushion. SSU added a pair of scores in the final quarter when Ny’em Bozeman returned two blocked punts for touchdowns for a 50-0 lead.

Livingstone, whose athletic director is Lamonte Massie-Sampson, a former SSU assistant AD, scored their lone touchdown with 4:41 left in the game.

Hartage threw for 164 and two touchdowns while running for 62 yards and a score. Carter hauled in three receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns while Tony Roundtree had five tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack for the SSU defense.

SSU Opens Volleyball Season

Savannah State opened their 2021 volleyball season with a 3-0 sweep of Brewton Parker on September 9 in Tiger Arena.

The Lady Tigers defeated their NAIA opponent by scores of 25-10, 25-23 and 25-20. Jedaiah Daniels had 11 kills for SSU while Sydney Harvile had 20 assists and Kloe Ludy had 16 digs.

Savannah State traveled to nearby Brunswick on Sept. 11 to play College of Coastal Georgia and Wesleyan.

SSU lost to Coastal Georgia 0-3 (15-25, 11- 25, 13-25) but bounced back to top Wesleyan 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-19).

Against Coastal Georgia, Ludy had 10 digs. In the game against Wesleyan, Caylen Samuel had 12 assists.

Perez Hired At Bethune- Cookman

Ruben Perez has been hired as the new assistant athletic director of communications at Bethune-Cookman University.

Prior to his arrival at the Daytona Beach, Florida institution, Perez spent the past three years at Morehouse College in a similar role.

The Brooklyn, New York native has an extensive resume which include stops in positions related to sports information at Paine College, Clark Atlanta University (2008-09), Chicago State University (2007-08) and his alma mater, Savannah State University 2003-07).

A former Marine, Perez also worked as the associate commissioner for men’s basketball and baseball at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (2015-17). He was the assistant commissioner for championships and external operations for the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 2009-11 and was the SIAC associate commissioner for championships and external operations from 2011-15.
