Wiltz and Walder Named To Track All Region Team
A pair of Savannah State track and field athletes have been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Region team for the 2021 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field season. Sophomore Darryl Wiltz earned the honor in the men’s 110m hurdles while fellow sophomore Jahvene Walder earned the spot in the women’s high jump.
USTFCCCA All-Region accolades are given to athletes who recorded top-five ranking marks in their region. The eight regions used in Division II are the Atlantic Region, Central Region, East Region, Midwest Region, South Region, South Central Region, Southeast Region and West Region.
Wiltz’s best time in the 110m hurdles this season came during the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge in mid-March where he posted a time of 14.55 which ranks the Dacula, Georgia native fourth in the region standings.
A native of Dunwoody, Georgia, Walder’s best time this season came at SSU’s final home meet, the Low Country Celebrational Invitational in late April, where she had a leap of 1.64m (5’4.5”). Currently, she ranks fourth in the South Region.
Scott Leaves Central Michigan
Former Jenkins High standout athlete Tyrone Scott has announced via social media that he is leaving the Central Michigan football program. Scott plans to continue his academic and football path at Missouri State.
During the 2020 season, Scott only played in two games for CMU where he caught four passes for 33 yards.
As a red-shirt freshman in 2019, the 6-foot- 3 wide receiver started ten of the 14 games he played in which resulted in him catching 37 passes for 350 yards and five touchdowns while leading the team with 17.6 yards per catch. Scott played in one game during the 2018 campaign, catching one pass for five yards.
He should have three years of eligibility remaining with the Bears who compete in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
As a senior at Jenkins, Scott played in 13 games and hauled in 58 receptions for 1,131 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Mitchell Competes At NAIA Track Nationals
Savannah native Kadari Mitchell recently competed
in the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Nationals which were held May 26-28 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Mitchell, who attends the University of South Carolina-Beaufort, competed in the men’s 200m, 100m and 4x400m relay events.
On May 26, Mitchell finished third in his heat of the 200m race which was good enough to place 17th out of 25 runners with a time of 21.72. His time was just 0.12 seconds from his career-best that he set at this year’s Sun Conference Outdoor Championship.
The following day, he ran in the 100m race where he finished fifth in his heat with a time of 10.64. Mitchell placed 24th out of the 35 runners that finished the race. Later that evening, Mitchell was part of the USCB 4x400m relay team that finished 10th out of 18 relay squads with a 3:14.34 mark. That time broke the school record, which was set nearly two weeks ago at Lee University.
