Campbell, Freeman Selected For NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop

Savannah State University athletic administrative staff members Marissa Campbell and Daijah Freeman have been selected to attend the 2020-21 NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop.

Campbell, a Savannah native and a graduate of Jenkins High School and Georgia Southern, is the SSU Assistant Athletics Director for Operations while Freeman, a Flowery Branch, Georgia native and a 2017 SSU alumnae, is the SSU Compliance Coordinator.

“I’m excited to be selected for the NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop and look forward to using the knowledge I acquire to enhance the department,” said Campbell. “During this process I hope to learn how to effectively build a program that will prepare our students for a successful life after college,” she added.

Freeman stated that she was grateful and thrilled to be provided the opportunity to be a part of this NCAA Leadership Academy Workshop cohort. “It is an honor to represent Savannah State Athletics Department and the University alongside Marissa Campbell.”

“I am excited to build and implement this leadership program to cater to the unique needs of our student-athletes. It is important that we prepare student-athletes to be leaders not only within their respective sports and within our department. The knowledge and tools they will gain will assist them far beyond their time at Savannah State University. With this experience, we have been afforded the opportunity to develop a leadership program to better service our student-athletes,” added Freeman

Held virtually for the 2020-21 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Leadership Academy Workshop is structured into three learning modules (Foundations, Applications and Implementations) taking place over an eight-month period. Participants will meet once weekly during each module and will have the ability to engage with members of their cohort throughout the program.

The first module started October 19 and ran through November 12. The second module takes place January 25 thru February 15 while the third module is from March 22 to April 12.

Campbell and Freeman are two of the 36 representatives from 18 different institutions in Division I, II and III.
