Cole Owns SSU
Record Not Babb
When Justin Babb rushed for 229 yards in Savannah State’s season opening win over Livingstone, many thought it was a school record. After receiving a few emails and calls and after some research, the owner of the single game rushing record belongs to Lucius Cole. Cole ran for 239 yards on 25 carries in 1990 against Albany State. Also in the Livingstone game, Babb ran for a 81 yard touchdown which many thought had tied a school record. That Savannah State record belongs to Casey Grigley who ran for a 91 yard touchdown run in 1986 against Georgia Southwestern. Although this writer is still checking into statistics from the early years that produced great backs like John Myles and Robert Slocum, for now the record still belongs to Grigley.
Bethune Wins First
Kory Kowalski kicked a 40- yard field goal with 2:12 left to give Bethune-Cookman their first win of the season, a 9-7 road win over Delaware State before a crowd of 3,873. Michael Williams intercepted a pass with 32 seconds left to seal the win for the Wildcats (1-4). Matthew Johnson led BCU by passing for 218 yards and rushing for 67 more. Travis Tarpley returned the opening kickoff 85 yards to the 2-yard line and Jaashawn Jones scored on the next play for Delaware State
1-3) for a 7-0 lead. Bethune scored all their points in the fourth quarter. Johnson threw a 46 yard touchdown pass early in final quarter to make the score 7-6.
CAU Fires Football
Clark Atlanta University Interim Athletic Director, Dr. Tamica Jones has announced that Head Football Coach Ted Bahhur was relieved of his duties effective immediately. Assistant Head Coach Keith Higdon has been named Interim Head Football Coach for the remainder of the season. In four-plus seasons, Bahhur coached the Panthers to a 20 and 29 record. This season, the Panthers overall record is 3-3. Since his firing, Bahhur has hired a lawyer and has filed a racial-discrimination complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against Jones and CAU president Dr. Carlton Brown. Bahhur, who is white, claims he was fired because of his race.
Albany State improved to 6-0
