SSU’s Wilson Invited To HBCU Combine

Former Savannah State football player John Wilson is among 52 players who have been invited to attend the NFL’s HBCU Combine in Miami from March 27-28.

The event will feature top players from historically black universities who did not participate at the NFL combine. Players will be evaluated in on-field workouts, off-field strength, speed and agility testing. They will also have the opportunity to interview with NFL teams in attendance.

The All-SIAC defensive back finished his career at SSU in 2019 where he helped the Tigers to their first winning season since 1998 with a 7-3 record. The Americus, Georgia native ended the season with 35 tackles, 3.5 tackles for losses, four pass breakups, one sack and one fumble recovery.

For his career, Wilson played in 36 games and had 132 tackles.

Mitchell Finishes Seventh at NAIA Championships

University of South Carolina-Beaufort sprinter Kadari Mitchell finished seventh in the finals of the men’s 200m race at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships which were held on the campus of South Dakota State inside the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on March 5-7.

After finishing eighth in the preliminary race on March 6, the sophomore from Savannah improved one spot to finish seventh in the finals on the following day. The former New Hampstead High School standout was clocked ta 22.07, which was 0.6 seconds away from moving into the top five.

SSU Softball Opens Conference Slate

The Savannah State softball team began their SIAC schedule by sweeping a weekend series from Paine College in Augusta.

SSU took a double header from the Lions on March 7 by scores of 19-2 and 13-2 and completed the sweep on March 8 with a 8-0 shut-out win. The Lady Tigers will travel to Jasper, Alabama to play in the SIAC Crossover March 12-14.

Savannah State will play Kentucky State and LeMoyne-Owen on March 12 and will face Spring Hill and Miles on March 13. SSU will close the crossover on March 14 with games with Tuskegee and Lane.

Starts SIAC Play

The Savannah State baseball team will open the SIAC portion of their schedule this weekend when they host Miles on March 14-15. SSU will play the Golden Bears in a double-header on March 14 and close out the series with a single game on March 15.

The Tigers will host Lane on March 17 and will play a three-game series at home with Paine on March 21-22. SSU will play Paine in a twinbill on March 21 and a single game on March 22.

Tiger Football To Have Orange & Blue Game

The Savannah State football team will close out their spring practice with the annual Orange & Blue game which will take place at TA Wright Stadium on March 11 at 6 p.m.
