Habersham Earns Preseason Honor

Savannah native and current Albany State running back McKinley Habersham was recently named to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference preseason all conference team.

The 5-9 senior, who play at Memorial Day during his school years, was named to the second team.

During the 2018 season, Habersham was second on the team in rushing with 596 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown.

Habersham led the Rams in rushing during his sophomore and freshman seasons.

Hansen Transfers To Albany

Former Savannah State basketball player Romani Hansen has transferred to Albany which is located in Albany, New York.

Hansen played one season at SSU and joined the program after playing two seasons at Independence Community College. The 6-foot-8 St. Croix, USVI native, averaged 9.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and one assist for SSU last year. He led the team with 27 blocks, tied for the team lead with 67 made free throws and shot 44 percent from the field.

Hansen had a career-highs of 20 points against Morgan State and 11 rebounds against Delaware State. Albany, a Division I school, competes in the American East Conference.

Bowie St, Fayetteville St. Picked To Lead CIAA

Bowie State and

Fayetteville State were picked by league coaches to repeat as Northern Division and Southern Division

champions, respectively, and meet in the 2019 CIAA Football Championship Game, scheduled for November 16th, 2019 in Salem, Virginia at Salem Stadium, with BSU predicted to repeat as conference champions. The predicted finish would set-up a rematch from last year’s title game that saw the Bulldogs defeat the Broncos, 30-10.

Led by Head Coach Damon Wilson, Bowie State finished last season with a 10-3 overall record (5-1 in the CIAA) and finished fourth in Super Region Two, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs after defeating West Alabama (41-35) in the first round. Fayetteville State, coached by Richard Hayes, also posted a 5-1 conference record (6-3 overall) to finish 10th in Super Region Two in 2018.

Behind Bowie State in the Northern Division is Virginia Union, Chowan, Virginia State, Elizabeth City State and Lincoln (PA) while in the Southern Division Winston Salem State, Shaw, St. Augustine’s, Livingstone and Johnson C. Smith are behind Fayatteville State.
