SSU Adds Six Mid-Year Transfers

The Savannah State football added six mid-year transfers at the beginning of the spring semester. Of the new players, five come from prep schools while one is a transfer.

Coming from Georgia Prep Academy in Atlanta are quarterback David Handler (6-5, 240) and defensive back Tetris Sweat (6-0, 175). Coming from East Coast Prep in Massachusetts is linebacker Ronnie Peterson (6-0, 205) while defensive back Raheem Coxfield (6-0, 200) is coming from the North Georgia Sports Academy located in Dawsonville and defensive end Corey Barrett (6-3, 270) is coming from Gattaca Prep in New Jersey. Defensive back Howard Newsome (6- 3, 230) transfers to SSU to Arkansas Baptist.

Tigers Remain Winless On The Road

Morgan State defeated Savannah State 67- 57 on February 7 to keep the Tigers winless on the road. The loss gives SSU a 5-17 overall record and 0-15 away from Tiger Arena. SSU led by six with 10:41 left but a 9-2 run gave the Bears a 45-44 lead. With the contest knotted at 50, Morgan State put together a 10-1 run to go ahead by nine with just over two minutes remaining. SSU got as close as 60-55 with 2:02 left before falling by ten. The Tigers were out-rebounded 43 to 24 and only had three offensive rebounds. Brian Pearson was the only SSU player in double figures with 12 points.

SSU Women Down Morgan State

Three players

scored in double figures as Savannah State defeated Morgan State 72-58 in Baltimore on February 7. Kenyata Hendrix led the way with 20 points and four assists followed by Bria Dorsey’s 19 points, four assists and four steals. Tiyonda Davis added 10 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. SSU led by two points at the half but started the second period with a 8-0 run to go ahead 41-31. Seven unanswered points gave SSU a 16 point cushion with 10:06 left in the game. Savannah State maintained a double digit lead the rest of the night and Morgan never got any closer than ten the test of the way. The victory gives SSU a 11- 10 overall record and a 6-3

mark in the conference.

Softball and Baseball Season To Start At SSU

The 2015 softball and baseball seasons at Savannah State will begin this week. On February 12, the SSU softball team will host Howard in a double-header at 4:00. Led by junior first baseman Torrian Wright, the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, SSU is looking for their fourth straight 20-win season. The baseball team will host Alcorn State in a doubleheader on Feb. 13 at 1pm and a single game against the Braves on Feb. 14 at 11am. The Tigers, led by senior first baseman Charles Sikes who was voted the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year, will also host Air Force on Feb. 16 at 2pm. SSU is trying to bounce back from last season’s 22-31 record. Later this season, the softball team will host the Georgia Bulldogs in a doubleheader on Feb. 25 at 3pm while the baseball team will host Notre Dame on March 11 at 5pm.
