SSU Assistant Takes Job At Albany State

Albany State has announced that Daniel Stockdale will serve as the interim head baseball coach for the 2015 season. Stockdale previously served as an assistant baseball coach for Savannah State. While at SSU, Stockdale worked directly with catchers and assisted with the development of all hitters. Stockdale played both basketball and baseball in college at Truett-McConnell Junior College, and finished his career at Reinhardt. The Atlanta native replaces Kenyan Conner, who served as the ASU head coach for four seasons and recently took a job at Benedict as the Tigers offensive coordinator in football.

Former SSU Player Dies

Former Savannah State football player Lester Dobson, 38, passed away January 17th at Haven Hospice of Orange Park, following a lingering illness. The Jacksonville, Florida native was a member of the SSU football team for three seasons (1994-96) and played defensive back. Funeral services were held Jan. 24 at Second Baptist Church in Jacksonville.The Interment was at Restlawn Cemetery in Jacksonville.

Tigers Rally Past Hampton

Down by 10 points with 4:31 remaining, Savannah State closed the game with a 16-4 run and went on to defeat Hampton 58-66 at Tiger Arena on January 24. Terel Hall made a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left for a 67-66 lead while Alante Feener sealed the win with a free throw with four seconds on the clock. The win gives SSU (5-14) a 5-0 home record as well as their first MEAC victory of the season. Both teams shot the ball well with SSU hitting 51 percent of their shots and Hampton making 56 percent of their shots. Hall scored 18 points for the winners while Brian Pearson added 13 points and 8 rebounds. Fenner had 12 points while Javaris Jenkins had 10. Former Johnson High star Ke’Ron Brown had 8 points, 5 steals and 4 assists for the Pirates. Jay Lang, a Beach High grad, is the Hampton radio director. Delaware State handed the Tigers a 59-50 road loss on Jan. 19. SSU led by eight at the half but the Hornets started the second period with a 27-8 run and never looked back. Hall led Savannah State with 12 points in a losing effort.

SSU Women Stop Pirates

The Hampton women’s basketball team is the class of MEAC basketball but the Pirates got a wake up call on January 24 as Savannah State downed Hampton 61-55 in Tiger Arena. The SSU win halts a Hampton 54 game winning streak against MEAC teams. Ezinne Kalu had 23 points for SSU (9-9) while Jasmine Norman added 11 and Tiyonda Davis grabbed 10 rebounds. On Jan. 19, SSU whipped Delaware State on the road by a score of 75- 46. Kenyata Hendrix led the way with 20 points while Kalu chipped in 16 points, 6 steals and 4 assists. Lauryn Fields scored a career-high 10 points and Davis had a career-high 15 rebounds.
