North Florida Tops SSU Men

North Florida made 15 of 18 free throws, including 13 of 16 in the second half, in a 65-61 win over Savannah State in Tiger Arena on November 26. It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Tigers and the second time North Florida defeated SSU within a span of eight days. UNF didn’t make any field goals the final three and a half minutes but made 4 of 5 shots from the foul line to secure the win. SSU battled back from a 10-point halftime deficit and trailed 63-61 with 15 seconds left. Hikeem Champaigne led the Tigers (2-7) with 13 points while Joshua Montgomery scored 11 points and freshman Jeremiah Hill chipped in 10. Jyles Smith added 8 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Kalu Makes All-Tournament Team

Ezinne Kalu was named to the all tournament team of the Seton Hall Thanksgiving Classic which took place November 29 & 30. SSU lost to Seton Hall 51-42 on Nov 29. SSU trailed by as many as 14 but never game up. SSU only had 16 free throw attempts while the Pirates had 35. Freshman Tiyonda Davis led SSU with 12 points and 9 rebounds while Kalu had 9 points. In the consolation game on Nov. 30, SSU lost to Liberty 89-79. SSU led by as many as 21 points in the first period and led 52-35 at the half but Liberty caught fire in the second half, shooting 62 percent from the field. SSU (3- 5) had four players in double figures with Kalu scoring 28 points. Jerryisha Williams had 14, Jasmine Norman had 10 while Davis had 10 points and 8 rebounds. On Nov. 26, SSU traveled to Mississippi State and lost 81-63. MSU led by 17 at the half and led by as many as 26 early in the second period. SSU could get no closer than 16 with 3:42 left. Kalu had 21 points for the Lady Tigers, Kenyata Hendrix added 17 and Davis contributed 12 rebounds.

Coaching Changes At Morgan State and Alabama A&M

A pair of long time college football coaches recently found themselves unemployed. Donald Hill-Eley who spent 12 years as the head coach at Morgan State and Anthony Jones who spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Alabama A&M have been let go. Hill-Eley, 44, had a 59- 76 record with the Bears and was 5-7 this season. Jones, 53, was fired after a 4-8 season. In his 12 years at A&M, he posted a 83-57 record. Central State of Ohio has parted ways with head coach EJ Junior III after a 2-9 season. The Marauders just finished their first season in the SIAC. In five years at CSU, Junior had a 9-44 record. Junior was one of the finalists for the SSU football job last summer. Other HBCU’s seeking new coaches are Grambling, North Carolina Central and Edward Waters.

Tennessee State Wins Playoff Game

Tennessee State is the lone HBCU team left in the NCAA playoffs after a 31-0 win over Butler in the first round of the FCS playoffs. The Tigers will Eastern Illinois on December 7. MEAC co-champs Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State were eliminated after losing their first round games. Bethune fell to Coastal Carolina 48-24 while SC State lost to Furman 30- 20. In the Division II playoffs, Winston-Salem State was knocked out of the playoffs with a 7-0 second round loss to Shepherd.
