Lady Tigers Fall To SC State

South Carolina State had a 14-0 run in the first half and rolled to a 75-54 win over Savannah State on January 26 in Orangeburg. SSU trailed by 20 early in the second half but managed to cut their deficit to 44-32 with 15 minutes left.

The Bulldogs led by as many as 24 late in the contest. Erin Hogue had 21 points and 12 rebounds for SSU (6- 14) while Jasmine Norman scored 15 points. SSU lost to Bethune-Cookman 50-41 on Jan. 21 in Tiger Arena. Cookman led by 15 midway in the second half but SSU battled back to get within 41-34 with 6:55 remaining but could get no closer. Hogue had 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

SSU Win Streak At Six

The Savannah State men’s basketball team has won six games in a row after recent wins over Bethune- Cookman and South Carolina State.

The Tigers nipped Cookman 43-40 at Tiger Arena on January 21 and blew past SCSU 64-49 in Orangeburg on Jan. 26. The game with B-CU was televised live on ESPNU and drew 3,852 fans. SSU led by nine but held on to get the win as Arnold Louis made the gamewinning free throws with 1:02 left while Preston Blackman sealed the victory with two free throws with two seconds on the clock. Louis led SSU with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Blackman burned the nets for 20 points in the win over SC State while Rashad Hassan came off the bench to contribute 17.

The Tigers (11-9) led from start to finish and took a 32-21 lead into the half. SSU built a 20 point lead with just under three minutes left in the second period.

Armstrong To Join CAU Staff

Berrien County head football coach Rob Armstrong has stepped down and will join the staff at Clark Atlanta as the Panthers assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. Berrien County had a 3-7 record in 2012.

SIAC To Be Represented In Super Bowl XLVII

The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will be well represented in Super Bowl XLVII. Former All-SIAC quarterback and Morehouse alumni Jerome Boger was named head referee and will become the second African-American in the history of the Super Bowl to serve as head official. Boger was the highest-graded official by the NFL this season. Boger, also a former SIAC official.

Former Fort Valley wide receiver Ricardo Lockette is a member of the National Football Conference (NFC) Champion, San Francisco 49ers. For the American Football Conference (AFC) Champion Baltimore Ravens, former Morehouse offensive lineman Ramon Harewood and 2006 SIAC Player of the Year Jacoby Jones, a wide receiver who played at Lane are members of the team.
