Jacques Curtis Named D-II Bulletin National Coach of the Year
Shaw University head coach Jacques Curtis has been named the 2012 Schelde North America/Women’s Division II Bulletin Coach of the Year, the publication announced Monday in its April issue. Curtis, a Savannah native, led his Lady Bears to a 29-6 overall record, the 2012 Division II national championship, the CIAA title and a 15-game win streak to close out the season.
SSU Track Team Runs In Jacksonville
The Savannah State track team participated in the Best Western/UNF Invite hosted by North Florida on March 30-31 in Jacksonville. Amber Hughes was 2nd in the triple jump while Jazy Seay-Blane and the 4x100m relay team was 4th in their events for the SSU women.
For the SSU men, the 4x100m relay team placed 4th as did Cameron Hall, who ran in the 110m hurdles.
Tiger Baseball Team Falls To A&T
The Savannah State baseball team lost a weekend series to North Carolina A&T over the weekend at Tiger Field. The Tigers defeated A&T 8- 3 on March 31 as Todd Hagen led the way with a double and a triple. Julius Green and Chris Arnold added two singles apiece in the win. The Aggies swept SSU in a double header on April 1 by scores of 7-3 and 5-2. Hagen and Ian Ferras
both hit doubles in the first game while Joseph McCrary hit a double for the Tigers in the second contest. Georgia State downed SSU on March 28 in Atlanta by a score of 15-3. Uriah Virgo had a single and a double in the setback and drove in two runs.
MEAC Football Press Luncheon July 20
The MEAC will host the annual Football Press Luncheon, Friday, July 20 at the Sheraton Waterside Hotel (777 Waterside Drive, Norfolk, VA 23510/ (757) 640-2754. MEAC head football coaches will be on hand to offer an inside view on the upcoming 2012 football season. A limited number of tickets are available to the public for the press luncheon and can be purchased by calling Nichole Jones at (757) 951-2055. Tickets are $30 per seat or $300 per table (10 persons) and must be purchased by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 13.
