SSU Runs At Ed Temple Classic

The Savannah State indoor track team opened the 2009 portion of their schedule by competing in Tennessee State’s Ed temple Classic on January 11 in Nashville, TN. Although no Tigers won any events, SSU had a combined 14 top 10 finishes. Sadie Sellow was second in the women’s one mile run while Tyrone McCoy (one mile run) and Chris Blount (triple jump) claimed third place in their respective events.

Highlanders Rally Past SSU Women

New Jersey Tech overcame a 10-point first half deficit with two big runs in the second period to post a 65-56 win over Savannah State in Tiger Arena on January 11. NJIT had a 15-4 run early in the second half and finished the game with a 14-5 spurt. SSU (3-12) was led by Raven Fields and Lashara Smith who scored 12 points each. The Lady Tigers lost at Bethune-Cookman on Jan. 5 by a score of 61-46. The Wildcats out-rebounded SSU 56 to 39 and had a 13-0 run the first half. Smith, who hails from Daytona Beach, led SSU with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Late Run Pushes Cowboys Over Savannah State

Oklahoma State used a 15-0 run to hold off a pesky Savannah State squad in a 83-56 win in Stillwater, OK on January 6. Before OSU’s run, the Tigers trailed by 16 but the run was too much to overcome in the end. Although SSU made 23 turnovers, they won the rebounding battle, 39 to 31. Chris Linton led the Tigers (7-8) with 16 points and six rebounds. Rashad Hassan added 12 points while Raye Bailey scored 11.

FAMU Releases 2009 Football Schedule

Florida A&M released their 2009 football schedule last week. The Rattlers will play the Miami Hurricanes on October 10 in Miami. The schools have a two-year deal that will pay FAMU an estimated $500,000. FAMU will play in two classic games with Tennessee State (Atlanta Football Classic) and Bethune-Cookman (Florida Classic). The Rattlers will have four home games which kicks off on September 5 versus Delaware State. Other home dates are Howard (Sept. 25), Norfolk State (Oct. 24) and North Carolina A&T (Nov. 7). Other road games are Winston-Salem State (Sept. 12), South Carolina State (Sept. 17), Morgan State (Oct. 31) and Hampton (Nov 14). A homecoming date has not been set.
