Lady Tigers Lose To SC State
After losing to Savannah State by 11 points on January 21, South Carolina State got revenge with a 55- 48 victory over the Lady Tigers on February 4 in Orangeburg, SC. The contest was tied at 17 with 7:17 left in the first half but the Bulldogs ended the period with a 14-4 run to go into intermission with a 31-21 lead. SC State started the second period with a 15-5 run to take a 19 point advantage with 13 minutes remaining. Savannah State (8-13, 2-7) used a 21-7 rally to cut their deficit to five with 39 seconds left but it was too late. Ezinne Kalu had 14 points for SSU while Jasmine Kirkland added 13 points and six rebounds. Jasmine Norman scored 10 points off the bench and Fila Smith had nine rebounds.
Louis Leading Tigers To Wins
Arnold Louis posted his third straight double-double in leading the Savannah State Tigers to wins over Trinity Baptist and South Carolina State. In the 86-56 win over Trinity on January 31 in Tiger Arena, Louis had 15 points and 11 rebounds and in the 73-60 victory over South Carolina State on February 4, the 6-7 forward had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Against Trinity, SSU led by 22 points with 14:30 left in the game but Trinity rallied to slice their deficit to 57-44 with 7:38 on the clock. SSU answered with a 25-4 run to go ahead 82-48 with 2:47 remaining. Deric Rudolph led the way for the Tigers with 20 points while Rashad Hassan had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Preston Blackmon had nine assists. SSU jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first half. The Tigers (13-10, 7-2) jumped out to a 23-8 lead against South Carolina State and led by as many as 16 in the first period. The Bulldogs scored the first nine points of the second half to cut their deficit to 41- 36. SC State got within three but Savannah State answered with a 9-0 run to expand their lead to 12 with just over 10 minutes left. A jumper by Arnold put the Tigers ahead by 13 but a 10- 4 surge by SCSU put the Bulldogs within seven with 4:15 left but they could get no closer. Rudolph and Joshua Montgomery both added 12 points and Blackmon had seven assists.
Transfers To Morehouse
Illinois linebacker Russell Ellington has transferred to Morehouse. Ellington (6-3, 230) was one of 11 recruits signed by Morehouse on February 1. Ellington was a member of the Illini football team in 2011 and 2010 but never saw any action on the field. In 2009, he started 5 of the 12 games he played in and had 42 tackles. During the 2008 campaign, he played in all 12 games and had eight tackles. While in high school, he was ranked among the top 30 recruits in the state of Illinois. He is the son of Russell and Angela Ellington and is majoring in sociology.
FVSU Releases Football Schedule
Fort Valley State has released their 2012 football schedule. The Wildcats start the season with road games at Delta State (Sept. 1) and Valdosta State (Sept. 8) before coming home to host Clark-Atlanta (Sept. 15) and Benedict (Sept. 22). After a road trip to Tuskegee (Sept. 29), FVSU comes back home to play Kentucky State (Oct. 6) before hosting Concordia (Oct. 13) for homecoming. The ‘Cats finish their final three games on the road at Stillman (Oct. 20), Morehouse (Oct. 27) and against Albany State (Nov. 3) in the 23rd Fountain City Classic in Columbus.
