Tigers Rout SC State
Deric Rudolph scored 24 points to lead Savannah State to a 83-53 win over South Carolina State in Tiger Arena on January 21 before 2,185 fans. Rudolph made eight 3-pointers in the game for SSU (9-10). Preston Blackmon scored all of his 17 points in the second half and Rashad Hassan added 13 points. The Tigers shot 59.5 percent from the floor in the second half but struggled from the free throw line, making just 5 of 15 shots. SSU fell at Bethune- Cookman 68-62 on Jan. 16. The Wildcats used a 12-3 run in the second half and made 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to down the Tigers. Hassan had 18 points for SSU while Blackmon had 14 and Rudolph scored 12 points.
Kalu Scores 23 for SSU Women
Ezinne Kalu scored 23 points to lead five Savannah State players in double figures in a 76-65 win over South Carolina State in Tiger Arena on January 21 before a crowd of 1,090. Jasmine Kirkland scored 16 points while Jasmine Norman, Zadous Pollard and Rikiah Gatling all chipped in 10 points for SSU (7-11). Savannah State fought back from a 10 point deficit and led by as many as 15 points in the second period. Bethune-Cookman defeated SSU 58-54 in overtime on Jan. 16 in Daytona Beach. SSU trailed by 10 in the first half and by five in the second half before a jumper by Kirkland tied the game at 49 with 52 seconds left in regulation. B-CU made 7 of 8 free throw attempts in overtime to get the win. Norman had 18 points for the Lady Tigers while Kalu scored 16 and Kirkland chipped in 12.
SSU Women Win 4x400m Relay
The Savannah State women’s 4x400m relay team won first place in the Gator Invite on January 22 in Gainesville, Florida. The squad of Aleah Hordges, Jazy Seay-Blane, Chavonta Roberts and Amara Jones had a time of 3:50.56. Jones came in second in the 200m and 400m races. For the SSU men, Justin Taylor won the triple jump with a lap of 14.65 while Darrius Baker came in third in the 200m race.
Wilks Joins Panthers Staff
Former Savannah State head football coach Steve Wilks has joined the coaching staff of the Carolina Panthers. Wilks will be the Panthers secondary coach/passing defense coordinator. The Charlotte native coached the San Diego Chargers’ secondary the past three years and served as the team’s assistant head coach last season. The Chargers ranked 31st in the NFL in pass defense the season before Wilks’ arrival but ranked 11th in 2009, first in 2010 and 13th this past season. Wilks served as head football coach at Savannah State during the 1999 season.
