Shuler To Play In All Star Game

Savannah State senior guard/forward Jovonni Shuler has been invited to play in the 8th Annual HBCU All-Star Classic on April 23 at the Columbus, GA Civic Center. The East All-Stars from the MEAC and CIAA will play against the West All-Stars from the SIAC and SWAC. The 6-4 Shuler, who averaged 18.1 points and 5.1 rebounds during the 2010-11 season, will play with the East All-Stars.

SSU Wins 5th At Florida Relays

The Savannah State men’s 1600m sprint medley relay team finished 5th in their race at the 67th Pepsi Florida Relays held April 1-2 in Gainesville, Florida. The relay team had a time of 3:23.18. The only other top 10 finish by SSU was Sharonda Redfield who was 9th in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.09m.

Tiger Baseball Has 15-14 Record

The Savannah State baseball team played four games last week and came home with 2 wins and 2 losses. SSU fell at Kennesaw State 7-3 on March 29. The Tigers traveled to North Carolina Central for a double-header on April 2 and won both games by scores of 8-3 and 15-3. The Eagles halted a SSU sweep by beating the Tigers 6-2 on April 3.

SSU Softball Splits With Alabama State

The Savannah State softball team split a double-header with visiting Alabama State on April 2, losing 12-1 but winning the nightcap 11-10. SSU (11-21) lost a doubleheader at Norfolk State on March 28 by scores of 6-5 and 3-2.

Howard Is Alcorn State SID

Savannah State graduate Augustus Howard was named the Alcorn State sports information director in October 2010. Howard worked as SID at Alcorn State from 1976 to 1979, and again from 1988 to 1993.

Texas Southern Fires Football Coach

Texas Southern fired football coach Johnnie Cole on April 1 while they await an NCAA report that is expected to detail major rules violations. Defensive coordinator Kevin Ramsey will serve as interim head coach, and the university will hire a permanent replacement after the 2011 season. Cole went 19-16 in three seasons, including a 9-3 record and the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in 2010.=
